Haiti Hatred PDF Print E-mail

Why is it, every time there’s a major crisis or catastrophe, there’s always a “Christian” minister who’s ready to publicly explain the reason for it? It happened following the devastation in New Orleans caused by Katrina.  This was blamed on the debauchery that took place in that town.  The 2009 Victorian bushfires were said by one preacher to be the result of the State Government’s abortion legislation.  According to Jerry Falwell, 9/11 was caused by abortionists, feminists, and gays – they, not Muslim terrorists, were responsible for the devastating attacks on the Twin Towers.

Pat Robertson of The 700 Club has made the latest of these pronouncements.  Last week, following the devastating earthquake that has possibly killed as many as 200,000 people and put at risk about 3 million, Robertson declared the following on his national television program:

"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti and people might not want to talk about. They were under the heel of the French, you know Napoleon the Third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the Prince.' True story. And so the Devil said, 'OK it's a deal.' And they kicked the French out. The Haitians revolted and got something themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after another."

This so-called “true story” is based on a fantasy that has absolutely no historical basis whatsoever.  It’s just an urban myth.  But even if it was true, what value is there in proclaiming this as the reason for such misery and suffering?  It is like rubbing salt into wounds.  It is like the well-meaning person telling you you’re sick because you lack faith or have sin in your life.  Statements such as this condemn people, increase their suffering and alienate them from the God who loves them.

Pat Roberston’s timing was lousy and his theology is even worse.  Throughout the Bible, God sent His prophets to warn people well before devastation took place in order for them to escape it.  The New Testament tells us that God is only good (James 1:17) and that He does not change. Matthew 5:45 says, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Natural disasters are not a time for Christians to grandstand at the expense of human suffering.  They are an opportunity for the church to rise up and help and give and pray.  We are taught to “mourn with those who mourn” not point the finger and tell them why they’re suffering.

Bible prophecy speaks of an increasing number of natural disasters leading up to the Second Coming of Christ.  When the next one happens I pray there will be no announcement of doom from an unchristian Christian.  Instead, I pray the body of Christ will rise up.

Hi Rob

Based on Pat Robertsons comments, we are all condemmed to damnation simply because Eve made a pact with Satan in the garden of Eden, to her what was on offer was greater than what she had, niavity and disobediance were Eve's down fall.

Satan had the upper hand, so if Pat Robinsons story is true!!! the same is true again.

So did any body tell Jesus when he hung on the cross that his sacrifice wasn't big enough to cover generational sin, and that those like Mary Magdelen, Paul, King David and the host of naughty biblical figures that by admiting their sin and asking forgivness didn't break that curse.

Does not the rain fall and sun shine on saint & sinner alike. I'm the prime sinner in my life and Jesus the only saviour of my soul, lets not get on the sideline with Satan and heap coals on the heads of the suffering.

Give first, Pray second.

God Bless
Pete

I am beyond words here...Let me see if I understand - you are publicly attacking a man and his ministry for repeating what is simply a well known historical fact among those who have SERVED over in Haiti on the mission field. You call it fantasy. How many times have you been to Haiti Rob? Go once and talk to those who have served and you will KNOW that this is not fantasy. The fact that Operation Blessing was one of the first on the ground with massive provisions in Haiti speaks volumes. You have made your position very clear by attacking every ministry who has stood up for righteousness. There is definitely grandstanding going on here...and it originated in your camp. Woe to those who compromise the truth of God's word...especially those who are in leadership. I recommend you peruse Revelations 2:12-17. All I see on your blogs is animosity and disdain towards those who have chosen to stand up for righteousness and speak the word of God in truth.

Hi Kim. Thank u for your comments. I am not attacking a man or his
ministry. I am simply stating my disappointment in unwise comments
made at a time of great human suffering. We are told to weep with
those who weep not make pronouncements as to why the suffering is
occuring.

Regarding the "pact with the devil" I have researched Haiti's history
and this so-called pact is highly spurious.

Your comments are a gross exaggeration. I do not attack "every ministry
that stands for righteousness.". Most ministries are wonderful and are
doing an amazing job of sharing the good news about Jesus. I do - and
will - speak out about those who misrepresent the gospel and those who
preach a "message" that only serves to repel people from the cross of
Christ.

Yours in Christ.

Passtor Rob:

I grew up in Central America. We kept away from Haiti. There evil deeds are horrible and do not want to comment on them. The totu matute were criminals practising witchcraft. However, I join in their suffering. I still do not understand why some brothers try to explain sad events based on personal revelation from G-d. They make me feel as if they are spiritually awaken and I am just a sinner. Do they really have an inside into G-d's actions? The psalms mentioned that who has given advice to G-d? The other brother closer to home and he is my friend tried to explain the events of a year ago. He declared the other day that the drought in OZ was over. Some brothers were so happy and I'm still waiting for the rain. Is G-d talking loud and clear and we do not listened? or is G-d talking to a very privileged group? or is the spiritualism the latest weapon of the enemy?

Perhaps we can learn something by observing the type of comment that Jesus made in response to the natural disaster that occurred when a tower in Siloam collapsed, killing eighteen. Jesus' comment was: "Do you think that they were worse sinners than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? I tell you, No: but unless you all repent, you shall all likewise perish". So, Jesus certainly wasn't quick to say the victims must have been worse sinners than everyone else. But neither was He silent, during such occassions, about the reality of sin as a factor in ultimate human destiny. To be quick to describe victims as worse sinners than everyone else, or to whitewash over the reality of sin, in the face of disaster - are both extreme responses. Jesus' response, rather, was to bring the public's focus back to themselves: they will all similarly die if they don't repent. That's a brilliant way to respond! Don't overcorrect one extreme and end-up in an opposite extreme. As for brother Pat Robertson, it's fair to add that his organization provides a huge amount of disaster relief. You said the Bible predicts a number of natural disasters leading up to the Second Coming of Christ. Do you believe, as the New Testament Book of Revelation seems to signify, and as the Old Testament books illustrate, that it will be God's holy angels, and sometimes the Lord Jesus Himself, who will bring many of those disasters?
